Background of the Study
Depression is one of the most prevalent mental health issues affecting elderly individuals globally, including in Gombe State. It can significantly impact the quality of life of elderly patients, leading to physical health deterioration, increased mortality, and decreased social interaction. The role of geriatric nurses in managing depression among elderly patients is crucial, as they are often the first point of contact in healthcare settings. However, geriatric nurses may not always be adequately trained in recognizing and managing depression in elderly individuals, especially in regions like Gombe State where healthcare resources may be limited (Johnson & Peters, 2024). This study seeks to examine the specific role that geriatric nurses play in managing depression among elderly individuals and assess their training and effectiveness in addressing this issue.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing recognition of depression among elderly individuals, the role of geriatric nurses in identifying and managing depression in Gombe State has not been sufficiently explored. Limited training, insufficient resources, and cultural attitudes towards mental health may hinder the ability of nurses to effectively address depression in the elderly. This study aims to investigate the challenges faced by geriatric nurses and identify strategies to improve care for depressed elderly patients in the region.
Objectives of the Study
To explore the role of geriatric nurses in managing depression among elderly patients in Gombe State.
To assess the training and preparedness of geriatric nurses in recognizing and addressing depression in elderly individuals.
To recommend strategies for improving geriatric nursing care for elderly individuals with depression.
Research Questions
What is the role of geriatric nurses in managing depression among elderly patients in Gombe State?
How prepared are geriatric nurses in Gombe State to recognize and manage depression in elderly patients?
What strategies can be implemented to enhance the role of geriatric nurses in managing depression among the elderly in Gombe State?
Research Hypotheses
Geriatric nurses in Gombe State are inadequately prepared to manage depression in elderly patients.
The role of geriatric nurses significantly impacts the management of depression in elderly patients in Gombe State.
Enhanced training and resources for geriatric nurses will improve the management of depression in elderly patients in Gombe State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on geriatric nurses in healthcare settings across Gombe State. Limitations include the subjective nature of assessing depression in elderly patients and potential biases in self-reported data from nurses regarding their training and effectiveness.
